The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.

Where Science Meets The Mystery
Explore both the art and science of what it means to hold sacred space for the intention of deep healing, and join the growing community of leaders devoted to alleviating suffering through the use of psychedelics.
We are in the midst of much more than a “mental health crisis.” It is an immense physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual emergency that asks those of us on the front lines to respond with brave hearts and new tools.
There needs to be a revolution in how we care for one another.
We believe strongly that the practitioner’s personal work is the most important preparation to step into the role of one who holds space for others. The fields of medicine, mental health, and most other disciplines involving healing, are filled with wounded healers, who come to their work by virtue of their own wounding, which opens the door of compassion for others.
Due to trauma, isolation, and the relentless demands of life, people are suffering, and nothing heals more than another human being’s full and compassionate presence.
To hold sacred space, you must come to know your own trauma and understand how its effects manifests in your own life, so that you can be present to another.
There are not enough therapists to tend to all in need. We must think more expansively about who can meet the need and recognize that there are many people whose own healing journey has shown them the way of the heart, the way to true and deep healing.
Who is this for?
This transformative training is designed for those in the helping professions who want to integrate work with non-ordinary states of consciousness into their practice. We welcome a wide variety of medical and mental health specialists, therapists, and wellness practitioners, including students of those disciplines.
We also welcome people who do not presently work in a healing profession but who are committed to their own personal evolution and feel a deep calling to do this work to help others.
We welcome practitioners who are already working with non-ordinary states, who want to enter into their own deep healing, in order to replenish their souls and inspire their minds so that they can continue to answer the call of these challenging times.
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious;
it is the source of all true art and science.”
–Albert Einstein
At the heart of this training is your own transformation so that you can boldly name, claim, and embody the powerful medicine you and only you can bring to the people you serve. You will learn to serve with C.A.R.E.. As you do that, you will empower others to connect to their own inner medicine.
COMPASSION
RESPONSIBILITY
AUTHENTICITY
EMPOWERMENT
The purpose of this training is to:
- Create a nourishing and safe space in which each participant can experience a deep healing process and learn from the inside out.
- Guide each participant in naming, claiming and fully embodying the gift that comes from their own inner healer.
- Offer a multidimensional group experience with a community of other brave souls called to this work.
What you will learn:
- To ground your practice in a multi-dimensional approach, to include the somatic, transpersonal, and trauma-informed models, paired with non-ordinary states of consciousness.
- How to ground using the C.A.R.E. Framework. (Compassion, Authenticity, Responsibility, and Empowerment)
- To be more than a sitter, but also a guide who holds deep sacred space for the sake of healing and transformation.
- How to listen generously so that your listening becomes a refuge for exiled parts of the client.
- About various kinds of trauma and how they affect all aspects of a person’s life.
- How and why psychedelics give us access to material that can be more readily processed and integrated than in talk therapy alone.
- To master the skills related to assessment and preparation ethically, skillfully, and with compassion. You will learn how to navigate the legalities and collaboration required to provide these services.
- The skills of relational shamanism, in order to create a deeply safe relational space with consensual agreements that support transformation.
- The skill involved in making the integration process another form of sacred medicine, and using it as the bridge that brings the client back into daily life.
- That set and setting aren’t just a list of rules and protocols, but that involve your relationship with the medicine you are providing, as well as your capacity to use this medicine for your own transformation.
- About the power of ritual and ceremony in deepening the experience of working in non-ordinary state of consciousness.
- About your own multidimensionality and how to help others embrace theirs.
- How to hold your center when traumatic material arises in a journey, as well as how to bring the person back to their own center.
Kathleen Hanagan was a psychotherapist for 34 years, and now serves as a psychospiritual guide, helping people connect to the healer within, through embodied inquiry, relational shamanism, and the use of entheogenic medicines. She guides and inspires people to courageously love and accept themselves fully in this lifetime, offering their unique medicine to a world in need.
Her book, Loveseed: The Template For Birthing A New World, is a map for personal and global awakening that ends the trance of fear and shows the way to a world based on love and truth. In 2024, she founded Medicine River, a retreat center for deep healing, in Capon Bridge, W. VA, where she lives and offers her medicine.
Heidi Block is a queer Jewish social worker and psychoanalyst, most interested in sex, psychedelics, and pleasure–centric healing. She helps people deepen experiences of pleasure, agency, and boundaries, and teaches powerful consent tools. She works to embody a world that centers marginalized peoples.
Harry Fox brings a blend of lived experience, deep training, and heartfelt presence. Since 2013, he has facilitated support groups for gay, bisexual, and questioning men married to women—including groups for couples and spouses—creating safe, supportive spaces for connection, healing, and authenticity.
He has completed Vital, a year-long training to become a Psychedelic-Informed Practitioner in preparation, harm reduction, and integration. He has also trained in The Art of Transformation: IFS & Psychedelics, building on his foundation as a Certified End-of-Life Doula (INELDA). To deepen this path, he completed Dr. Martha Jo Atkins’ Dying School and The Psychedelic Core Course for End of Life. His own transformative journeys with psychedelics continue to guide his work, grounding it in compassion, curiosity, and integration.
Drawing on years of caregiving at the end of life and his background as an EMT, Harry brings steadiness, empathy, and reverence to his practice. He aspires to hold space where others can safely explore, navigate life’s transitions, and discover deeper layers of healing and transformation.
“I joined Holding Sacred Space seeking experience and people to grow with, and I found both in a place that is warmly inviting and clearly affirming of queer identities. The hands-on learning and the trainers’ seasoned guidance made growth feel possible; the genuine inclusion made it feel safe. I am leaving with skills, community, and a life gently transformed for the better.” -Austin Miller
“The experience was as much about inner discovery as it was about learning to hold space for others. I met parts of myself to be known more fully, sat with them, and found new language for presence and care. The cohort I worked with became kin, a circle bound by shared experience, still weaving threads of connection and support long after the last day together. The depth and tenderness of the work is shaping me as a practitioner; teaching me to listen with greater humility, to hold space with reverence, and to sense where I still long to grow. I leave with a foundation both strong and alive, not a rigid structure, but fertile ground. From here, I can continue to cultivate the kind of space I dream of offering: spaces that honor the mystery, invite healing, and allow others to meet themselves more deeply. This training was not just education; it was initiation, a quiet turning of the soul toward its own unfolding path.” – Dean Piedmont
“I am grateful for and received much benefit from the Medicine River Training on both professional as well as personal levels. As a seasoned clinician, I appreciated the opportunity to add new knowledge-base and skills in my service of others. I see that these medicines along with careful preparation, space-holding, and integration have the potential to offer progress in ways that standard modalities simply do not touch. As a wounded human, I was safe to immerse in the deep healing of a carefully constructed container with beautiful, unique, and aligned souls; I experienced much needed relief, realignment, and renewal and made meaningful connections that have endured beyond our physical time spent at Medicine River. ” – Laura
“The Holding Space training was a deep dive into being a facilitator of these extraordinary experiences. There was a right balance of serving, journeying, and interactive lessons. The training is beautifully crafted and delivered by Kathleen and the other teachers with loving kindness and expert supervision. The physical environment of Medicine River is gorgeous. Having the experiential weekends with the same cohort each time was a novel benefit, and helped beautiful new friendships to be born. The training has helped me clarify where my strengths and interests are in the medicine world. I learned so much that I will use in all of my work. Thank you!” – B.L.
“This training was personally transformative and I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity. Kathleen and the other teachers bring so much wisdom to their teaching drawn from a depth of experience — it’s truly invaluable. Sincere, intuitive service is taught, but more importantly, modeled throughout the course. I took away so many lessons, experiences and new perspectives that are applicable to every area of my life.” – R
