“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” Buddha

We’ve all heard the importance of “being in the moment” over and over, and there are countless practices that help you do that, from meditation to yoga to rock climbing and dancing the tango. So what’s so important about the moment? We go from moment to moment and you can’t hold onto a moment, even if you use your smartphone to take a photo. The moment is past, and you can have new moments enjoying the moment you photographed, but that moment is over.

Here are some really good reasons to become more skillful at being in the moment, from an energy perspective:

1- Being in the moment allows you to change what is happening if you need to, or to continue enjoying what is, if that is what you want. It is key to understand that the inside is the source of outside events, and that everything is vibrational (all is energy). The way vibrational energy moves within the space of your body sets up the signal that attracts outside situations. Your fear of abandonment attracts the unavailable guy, your fear of not having enough leaves you lacking, and your anger that someone is not doing things your way may cause that person to walk away from you, frustrating you more. Changing your inner signal can change what comes your way.

2- It is only in the moment that we can raise our energy. A wise spiritual teacher I once had, Zoe Marae, said, “The ‘moment’ brings time and space together. It is the only ‘place’ that energy can be raised since it is the only place you can shift from a low vibration to a higher one. The moment creates attention on the root flow or inner experience of an outer attraction. It is in the moment we become aware. Awareness is the goal of the moment and of life.” In other words, pay attention to what you are feeling in the moment. It informs you what to do next.

All energy moves from Source (vibrational) to the emotional body to the physical body. We are vibrational beings and when we learn to energize ourselves from the inside via connection to our vibrational body, rather than energizing ourselves from the outside via our connection to others, we claim a great power that can change everything, whether person, substance, or circumstance. It is what allows a 120 lb woman to pick up a car to save a child, or what allows a person to transform suffering into a priceless gift that can be given to others.

3- In the moment, we can access our full power. We are not separate from this energy. All the various ways we attempt to secure outside energy are subconsciously generated from the memory of how energy first came to us, which is our nurturing imprint. It is held as a deeply ingrained limitation of energy flow arising from the imprint from your mother and father at birth.

Zoe described it like this: All life is like the river flowing. Mom is like the water in the river and the banks are like dad (translated, the feminine is the movement and the banks are the masculine structure). Without water, there is no river, and without the banks, there is no river. We need both masculine and feminine energies to flow.  If Mom’s river flows at 60% of her potential, and dad holds the banks at 40% of his potential, Mom carries more energy in this case, and thus more light. Children identify with the parent with greater light, or take care of the one with less.

This imprint of our potential/ limitation is at the root of our yearnings, our connections, and our lives in general. The limitation of this imprint dominates our entire reality—our addictions, our jobs, our relationships— until it is recognized. This limitation is not repaired, but simply unselected by shifting and raising energy inside, which can only be done if we are fully present in the moment.

The original or Source flow begins in the moment of experience and expands as the signal attracts your world. The outside is physical and loops back to the inside as vibrational. Fully experiencing the moment is the system that returns it back to us inside. This loop is what allows us to course correct and for real change to happen. It begins with awareness in the moment.

4- Being in the moment is the art of union with reality, and that is co-creation at its best! Think of the moment as the center of the infinity sign. It is the infinite expression of love into and out of form. When you are in the moment, you are a portal through which love flows. When we are fully in the moment, we realize our oneness with all that is, and miracles can happen. We are no longer dissociated to another time and place, and can embody our emotions and feel the universe pulsing through us. We can love and appreciate more fully, and our complaints fall away. We are experiencing what no money can buy—-being present to life.

We are not conditioned to do this, but to attach to outside sources of energy.   When we do the work to free ourselves of our conditioning, we open our lives to new possibilities, and we become masters of the moment. This brings its own rewards, and we begin to experience more joy and pleasure by allowing the energy of life to move through us.
